Strauss/Pogozelski House

414 First Ave, New Hyde Park, NY

This is the house that was built by Michael Strauss in the early 1900s.

After Michael's wife Johanna died in January 1936, Michael sold the house to Hedwig after being urged to do so by Lillian. Michael then lived at the homes of his daughters.

Here's the Pogozelski house today. It's no longer owned by family.

Lubowiecki House

21 North 10th Street, New Hyde Park, NY

When Leon built the house, the street name was Spruce Street. It was later changed to N 10th Street.

Leon built the house in 1927. Joanne was the first child born in this house. Here's the original Lubowiecki house. Leon and Kinga Lubowiecki owned the lot (not shown) immediately to the left that was a lawn and garden.

At first, everyone slept in the upstairs? (Did nobody use the rear bedroom?) After Joanne got maried, Leon and Kinga decided to rent the upstairs. Leon modified the stairway so it led to an outside door. Leon and Kinga slept in the downstairs front room. Leon Jr, Chester, and Stanley slept in the rear bedroom, which Leon had extended at some point.

Virginia slept in the dining room on a Castro Convertible sofa. When Chester and Stanley moved out and Leon and Kinga died, Virginia moved into the back bedroom and Leon Jr into the front room.

Leon Jr. purchased the house from Kinga but Kinga continued to live there.

When Leon Jr died, the house and property were sold. The old house was torn down and two new houses were built on the land, shown below.

Gozelski Farm

Gainesville, NY

Gozelski Potato Farm

The Gozelski Potato Farm was purchased by William and Johanna Gozelski in 1957 and well-established sometime before 1965. Initially, the farm consisted of 100 acres, but was expanded to 643 acres. The family still owns the land but leases it out to other farmers in the area.

The Gozelski house is 3,000 square feet and still owned by family. Johanna “JoJo” Marie Berwanger nee Gozelski—she's the daughter of Peter Gozelski (1939-2021)—lives there with her husband Doug and daughter Johanna “Jojo” Mackenzie.

The barn was home to tractors and other farm equipment used for potato farming. Today, it's home to two horses, some Jersey cows, 12 chickens, 5 goats, and a cat.

Sawicki House

Garden City Park, NY

The photo on the left below shows the house as it looked for many years starting in the early 1960s. The brick-like facade (made from Italian lava) was installed by Ed and Ed Jr. The distinctive bay window was added by Ed in about 1957, likely with help from his father-in-law Leon. Prior to that, it was wooden weatherboard.

The photo on the right is the house as it looks today.

The Sawicki house is still in family hands.
