John Joseph “Puts” Gozelski Jr was born on June 22, 1927 to Lillian and John Gozelski. John graduated from Northport High School and attended the Long Island Agricultural and Technical Institute in Farmingdale, New York. He was involved with the family business: potato farming.

This explanation of how John got his nickname Puts comes from his sister Phyllis, via her daughter Rene. When John was young, it didn’t matter which hand you put something in, he would put it in the other hand. So, Lillian and John (his parents) would say he “puts” it in the other hand. Evidently, it happened so often, they called him “Little Puts”. As he grew, they dropped the Little.
He was a retired Detective Sergeant Homice Squad of the Suffolk County Police Department.

He died on November 15, 1987, and is buried at Northport Rural Cemetery.
