Joan Elizabeth Gozelski was born on September 8, 1931 in Mineola, New York to parents John Joseph and Lillian Gozelski. She attended the Academy of Saint Joseph in Brentwood, the College of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station (New Jersey), and secretarial school.

She died on October 14, 2007 in East Northport, New York and is buried in Saint Philip Neri Cemetery, East Northport, New York.

Ben Joseph Cowan Sr was born in 1927. He attended Oakwood High School in Dayton, Ohio and Ohio State University. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Worked at the Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO). He died on January 25, 2014 and is buried at Saint Philip Neri Cemetery, East Northport, New York.

They married on May 5, 1951 in Huntington, New York at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Northport, New York. The wedding party included relatives Phyllis, John Joselph, and George Gozelski, and Anthony and Dorothy Pogozelski. The reception was at Bethpage Country Club.
