Zahns Airport
Zahns Airport was located in North Amityville, NY about one-mile south of Republic Airport. It opened in 1941 and closed in 1980.

Many people learned to fly at Zahns at the Amityville Flying Service. This included Ed Sawicki (grandson of Kinga Strauss), who learned to fly in the Cherokee 180 pictured below.

“We'd takeoff and fly south over the South Bay, then head west to practice my banking and turning at about 3,000 feet with the Jones Beach water tower at the center of my turn radius.” said Ed.

The airplane used by the newspaper Newsday for taking aerial photos was a Piper Cub Supercruiser owned and operated by Zahn, Hoffman, and Looney Flying Service. The high-wing of the Piper allowed an unobstructed view of the ground, which was good for photography.
